What was the most important thing for you about finding the perfect dress?
As a plus size bride, the most important thing to me was finding a dress that I could feel beautiful and comfortable in. I’ve overcome a lot of body negativity to finally start to love my body the way it is, so it was important to me to find a dress that would support my body positive outlook. I tried shopping for my dress locally (I live in Humboldt County), but during my appointment at the local store I got the feeling that my consultant’s main goal was to make me appear smaller than I am. I was so relieved when I went to Always Elegant Bridal in Yuba City and my consultant Alyssa said “I’m here to make the dress fit you, not to make you fit the dress.”
What was the best personal moments of your wedding day?
My mom seeing me ready to walk down the aisle. Seeing her tear up with joy made the day feel real.
Please share something that stood out on your wedding day?
It was important to me to incorporate Scottish traditions in my wedding to honor my heritage. My husband, the groomsmen, and my dad all wore kilts and we had a local pipe band play the music for the processional and recessional. All of our groomsmen wore different tartans, the plaid pattern on the kilts that is representative of each specific clan, to give our wedding a “gathering of the clans” feeling.
What was your inspiration for your wedding day and dress?
My inspiration for the wedding was my venue. We were nestled into the redwood forests and it inspired me to go for a woodsy/faerie princess wedding vibe. As for my dress, I wanted a tulle ballgown from the first time I saw Kate Hudson in the movie Bride Wars! My dream dress ended up being even better than Kate’s dress in the movie though, because it was mine.
Any advice to future brides?
Delegate, delegate, delegate! I cannot stress enough the importance of allowing yourself to relax on your big day. Take it all in because it will be over before you know it.
